Strengthening the bridge between climate science and coastal action
On January 14, during the Tideline Ecosystem Kick Off in Paris hosted by Bpifrance, the EDHEC Climate Institute and the Waves of Change Coalition officially launched a new partnership to strengthen the link between climate science and action for coastal territories.
This collaboration aims to bring EDHEC Climate Institute’s research, methodologies, and analytical tools directly into initiatives supporting coastal resilience, helping cities, communities, and economic stakeholders translate scientific expertise into actionable strategies in the face of growing climate risks.
In this video, Nicolas Schneider explains why building long-term resilience for coastal economies requires going further in the quantification of physical climate risks. He highlights the importance of developing more granular projections of future climate damages, better capturing acute physical hazards affecting physical assets such as buildings and infrastructure, and improving the modelling of chronic climate impacts through regionally applied, sector-specific damage functions.
He also underlines the need to move toward probabilistic climate scenarios, enabling decision-makers to integrate uncertainty into their assessments and better anticipate the range of possible future outcomes. Finally, he stresses the importance of bridging the gap between academic research and real-world implementation, ensuring that robust scientific methods can effectively support financial institutions, policymakers, and coastal stakeholders.
Through this partnership, EDHEC Climate Institute and Waves of Change are committed to supporting the development of more comprehensive approaches to risk quantification and adaptation, contributing to more resilient coastal territories and blue economy sectors.
