ECI and SCR Participates in IPE Transition Conference & Awards 2025: Advancing Science-Based Climate Finance

About the IPE Transition Conference
Organised by Investment & Pensions Europe (IPE), the Transition Conference provides a forum to explore how energy transition dynamics intersect with financial strategies, regulation, and policy. The 2025 edition focused on manager selection, the evolution of net-zero investment strategies, blended finance and the agenda of Asset Owners. The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognising leadership in climate-aligned investment.
Scientific Climate Ratings Officially Launched
A few days before the conference, on 13 June 2025, ECI announced the launch of Scientific Climate Ratings (SCR) — the first rating agency fully dedicated to assessing the financial impact of climate risk. Developed within the Institute’s research ecosystem, SCR provides forward-looking ratings that quantify both transition risks and physical risks using high-resolution climate data and established financial valuation methods. Initial coverage includes over 6,000 infrastructure assets in 2025, with expansion to more than 5,000 listed companies in 2026. SCR proposes a dual-perspective rating framework with two complementary outputs: climate exposure ratings under a continuity scenario and scenario-adjusted financial climate impact estimates through 2035 and 2050. Ratings incorporate company-level adaptation strategies, assessed using ECI’s ClimaTech database.
How can investors quantify the financial materiality of climate risk?
On 16 June, Rémy Estran-Fraioli, PhD, CEO of SCR, presented the agency’s methodology at the IPE conference in a session titled: "Turning Climate Science into Forward-Looking, Financially Material Insights"
It integrates:
- Asset-level climate damage functions;
- Scenario-based Net Asset Value (NAV) projections including a probability-based scenario ;
- Assessments of corporate decarbonisation and resilience strategies, informed by ECI’s ClimaTech Research Programme.
The ClimaTech Research Programme, developed by the EDHEC Climate Institute, is a structured taxonomy designed to evaluate the effectiveness of decarbonisation and resilience strategies across key sectors. Built by engineers, scientists, and sector experts, it includes eight sectoral reports and a freely accessible qualitative database. Quantitative indicators are available through institutional partnerships. Institutions are also invited to contribute by joining a dedicated review committee of academic, public, and private stakeholders. More information
Recognising Leadership in Transition Strategy
During the awards ceremony on 17 June, Rémy Estran, Founder and Chief Executive Officer cientific Climate Ratings, presented the Leadership in Energy Transition & Net Zero award. Resulting from a rigorous selection process, this award recognises asset owners that have integrated the energy transition across a broad range of asset classes and demonstrated clear leadership in managing and implementing transition strategies. The award was presented to Railpen, and was received by Adam Gillett, Head of Sustainable Investment. The Pension Protection Fund received a Highly Commended distinction.
