One Health Winter School 2025, A Multidisciplinary Programme on Interconnected Health

Overview

The One Health Winter School 2025 is a multidisciplinary programme exploring the interconnected health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. Throughout the week, participants will examine the origins and principles of the One Health concept; the biological foundations of health such as immunity, microbiomes, and holobionts; the human-driven disruptions that affect ecosystems and human well-being (e.g. antibiotic resistance, pollution, climate change); and solution pathways through biodiversity, agroecology, biotechnology, and innovation.

Held at the Sophia Agrobiotech Institute in Sophia-Antipolis (France) from 15 to 19 December 2025, the Winter School combines lectures, workshops, debates, and networking activities, fostering international and interdisciplinary exchange across scientific, academic, and professional communities.

The One Health Winter School is intended for an international audience of students, early-career researchers, and professionals interested in the scientific, ecological, and societal dimensions of One Health.

The Winter School aims to explore the One Health concept from a holistic perspective, drawing connections between biological processes, ecological dynamics, socio-economic systems and policy implications. Its goals are to:

  • Address major health challenges by confronting the visions and expectations of professionals across sectors

  • Provide up-to-date knowledge to the community

  • Highlight innovations and emerging initiatives, including start-ups contributing to healthier and more sustainable systems

Frédéric Ducoulombier's presentation

On 17 December 2025, at 4:00pm, Frédéric Ducoulombier, Programme Director, Climate Regulation & Policies, EDHEC Climate Institute will deliver a lecture–discussion entitled “Blind Spots, Externalities, and Beyond: Re-embedding the Economy for Sustainable Ecosystems and Human Health.”

Frederic_Ducoulombier_Square

In this session, he will explore how economic thinking gradually detached from ecological realities despite sharing a common foundation with ecology (oikos, “the home”). He will discuss how this separation became embedded in today’s indicators, models, and institutional procedures, and how it contributes to the pressures examined throughout the Winter School, from antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic risks to food systems, land use, and biodiversity loss.

The session will conclude with an overview of emerging approaches that seek to reintegrate ecological dimensions into economic tools and policy frameworks. Designed as a transversal and integrative framing, this lecture will help participants connect biological and ecological insights with the economic and political structures driving contemporary health and environmental challenges.
